NASPAA-APPAM DOCTORAL WORKSHOP 2009
February 20 – 21, 2009
The BWI Westin Hotel, Baltimore, Maryland


Purpose: This workshop is designed to be an opportunity both for sharing our concerns and our best ideas as well as for thinking strategically and imaginatively about the challenges of the 21st Century for doctoral education in public administration and policy.

Facilitators:

Elizabeth Ann O' Sullivan, North Carolina State University

Workshop Format: 

  • Start: 9am Friday, Feb 20, 2009
  • Opening Session: 9am-Noon, Discussions with new Doctoral Program Directors.
  • End: With Reception at 5:00 pm on Saturday February 21, 2009
  • Workshop/Brainstorming sessions throughout both days
  • Lunch both days and Reception included

DISCUSSION TOPICS
Current Issues and best practices will be discussed, for example:

  • Diversity
  • Enhancing Dissertation Research Scholarship
  • Mentoring and 
  • NRC Doctoral Survey

We will jointly envision alternatives for Doctoral Programs in the 21st Century, for example:

  • Alternative Sources of Knowledge
  • Recruitment of Students of Color
  • Technologies
  • The Impact of the Market
Send us your ideas about specific topics or issues you want to be addressed. Also, if you have a short (1-2 pages) idea or concept you would like distributed to participants in advance, please send it to: naspaa@naspaa.org. Bring with you handouts and materials illustrating best practices you wish to share.
